Diabetics and Ramadan fasting

Diabetics and Ramadan fasting

With the approach of the holy month of Ramadan, allow me first to congratulate all of you and, , be a good month for all of you and God rest on you health and wellness.

Today, I would like to shed light on some important aspects of how to deal with diabetes during this holy month because the most problems of blood sugar disturbance appear during this period because of the difference in daily habits and the nature of dietary habits without knowing the adjustments to be made to the treatment to suit the requirements This holy month.

First there is a group of patients who advise not to fast in general and are:

  • Pre-pubertal children.
  • These patients with diabetes who use insulin as a treatment (not pills) advise not to fast.

People who advise not to fast also:

1. Those who do not have an awareness of hypoglycaemia because they have no symptoms.

2. Patients who suffer from diabetes complications such as retinal problems, heart problems and kidney failure.

If the patient’s general condition is stable and able to fast, we recommend the following:

1. Visit the doctor before the start of the month of Ramadan to inform him of the intention of fasting to be evaluated fully and given the appropriate instructions according to his situation.

2. Modifying the treatment dates to be taken at the time of breakfast and suhoor.

3. Dosage adjustment is done after consultation with the doctor, but in general, the full dose is taken at breakfast time and the dose taken at the time of Suhur decreases to prevent the sugar bouts of depression.

4. Do not delay breakfast.

5. delay the suhoor for the last time before the dawn ears.

6. Avoid sugary foods and beverages as much as possible and replace them with drinking water.

7. Avoid fatty foods.

8. Increase the intake of vegetables and fruits.

9. Monitoring blood sugar levels By taking measurements regularly, especially in the early days of fasting, we usually advise patients to take a measurement before breakfast, suhoor and another after breakfast and suhoor in two hours.

In the end, the person is a doctor himself. If he notices that he is unable to fast after the first days of the month, there is nothing wrong with him.
