Treatment of metelium, should be withdrawn from the market or not

Over the past two days, the media have been talking about this treatment, which is often used to reduce the symptoms of nausea and vomiting due to sudden death due to Sudden Cardiac Death, and called for its withdrawal from the market for this reason. Unfortunately, there is no alternative treatment for children. In the Jordanian market, the other is for adults there are other treatments available.

I would like to share with you the latest developments of the Drug Risk Assessment Committee of the European Medicines Agency in the report issued on 7 March 2014 which summarizes, In principle, the benefits of the desired metelium treatment outweigh the incidence of side effects and for this reason it has not been withdrawn from the market but in the same context and based on the presence of factors that increase the chances of the occurrence of these side effects, the general conditions have been modified to be used as follows:

For children weighing less than 35 kg, the dose should be 0.25 mg / kg and not more than three times a day.

Children and adults weighing more than 35 kg, the dose is as follows:

  • 10 mg tablets, oral, and even 3 times a day.
  • 30mg tablets, twice a day.
  • It is not used for patients with heart problems, especially those who have irregular heartbeat or who use treatments that increase the chances of irregular heartbeat.
  • Do not use the treatment for people with liver failure.
  • Use only for symptoms of nausea and vomiting.
  • Do not use it to treat swelling and heartburn.
  • Use for short periods not exceeding one week.
