Although there is a great deal of research on obsessive-compulsive disorder, the exact causes of the disease have not been identified. There is a belief that the brains of the injured work differently than normal, and that the imbalance in the neurotransmitters is related to the disease. - Environmental factors: There are some environmental factors that act as a trigger for infection, including inflammation.
- Several factors may interact and contribute to the development of the disease, such as stressful life events, hormonal changes, and personality traits.

There are many ways in which a casualty can help himself out, in addition to seeking treatment:
- Refocusing attention: By doing some exercise, or playing computer; to curb the desire to implement compulsive behavior.
- Take care of yourself: Relaxing through meditation or deep breathing for at least thirty minutes every day is important, stress can lead to the onset of compulsive behavior.
- Postponing thinking for later: Instead of worrying about compulsive thoughts at several times during the day, thinking can be delayed by writing them down, planning to think about them later.
