water shortage
The US Environmental Protection Agency reports that the global supply of water is relatively low: less than 1% of the water covering 70% of the Earth’s crust is human-usable water, and these supplies are not equally distributed In all areas, so some places suffer from water shortage more than others, and make matters worse, some of the sources of water to be contaminated, and here are some facts related to water shortage:
- The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) reports that 783 million people live without clean water.
- The World Water Council reports that every day, at least 3,900 children worldwide die as a result of exposure to diseases transmitted by polluted water.
- 2.5 billion people lack basic sanitation, increasing their risk of preventable diseases according to Food & Water Watch (FWW).
- Hundreds of millions of people in sub-Saharan Africa are forced to walk several miles to obtain any quality of water according to The Water Project, exposing them to disease and loss of time.
- FWW reports that at least two-thirds of China’s urban areas are water-deficient, and that at least 400 million people in Africa live in areas with water scarcity.
- 1.8 billion people use drinking water contaminated with faeces, which means cholera, diarrhea, dysentery, typhoid and polio. More than 500,000 people are estimated to die from diarrhea caused by drinking water pollution every year.
Proposed solutions to the problem of water shortage
Among the solutions proposed to solve the problem of lack of freshwater, the following:
- To sensitize the society and individuals about the importance of conserving limited water resources and rationalizing water consumption.
- Development of wastewater treatment, recycling and sterilization technologies for use in several areas, including use as drinking water.
- Development of irrigation methods to reduce waste of water; 70% of the world’s fresh water is used for agriculture.
- Developing the efficiency of seawater desalination plants.
- Improve watersheds where rainwater is collected and developed for use, especially in countries without reliable water sources.
- Monitoring water quality, measuring it, ensuring it is clean and free of contaminants; to ensure human health and promote biodiversity.
- Monitoring population growth that calls for increasing the need for fresh water for irrigation or human consumption.
